For Earth Day, we teamed up with Eco-Schools to give young people a platform to discuss the environment and more specifically, wildlife. The environment is an ever-pressing issue for our voters, and one that they are keen to have their voices heard on.

Secondary, 16+ & College voters were asked: “Would you like to see more wildlife brought into your built-up area?”, Primary 7-11 voters discussed: “Would you like to see more wildlife in your towns and cities?” and Primary 5-7 voters considered: “Would you like more wildlife in your towns and cities?”

Age 5-11 voter

All children agree that there should be more wildlife around the town they live in because wildlife helps to attract bees and different types of insects, also the flower beds make the town look beautiful and attractive.

Age 11-16+ voter

Although having wildlife in our local area is important, the government should be prioritising other issues first, we are in a cost of living crisis!

Age 16+ voter

I welcome wildlife in the area I live, as long as it is safe to have them.

Feedback from our Impact Partners...

Thank you to Let's Go Zero and Earth Cubs for responding to young people's voices on this VoteTopic!

"Children thrive in nature so we are not surprised to see that 83% of primary-aged children want to see more wildlife in their towns and cities. Greening our schools is the best place to start - to help give children more access to wildlife and the natural world they love"

Alex Green, Head of Let's Go Zero

Earth Cubs responded with the following video:

  • Primary voters were discussing whether they would like to see more wildlife in their towns and cities.
  • Just over 4 out of 5 young people aged between 7 & 11 voted 'Yes'.
  • Similarly, 87% of 5-7-year-olds voted 'Yes'.

  • Secondary voters were discussing the question, "Would you like to see more wildlife brought into your built-up area?"
  • Almost 60% voted 'Yes' which, whilst a majority, was markedly less decisive than the Primary vote.
  • 74% of 16+ & College voters said 'Yes' to the same question.

  • Most 'Yes' voters said that increasing wildlife in these areas would have environmental benefits.
  • Some cautioned that certain types of wildlife would have better different success rates. For example, native species and breeds.
